As the first chief geologist of the United States Geological Survey, Gilbert’s life and work spanned the heroic age of American geology in the late 19th century and early 20th century. He pioneered many theories in the earth sciences and advanced concepts of mountain building, fault scarps, earthquake probabilities, and lake cycles that are still used today. Gilbert also advocated for public welfare by encouraging people to evaluate risks and disclose geologic hazards. Utah was one of Gilbert’s favorite study areas and it was here that he formulated many of his theories and was the first to recognize the earthquake hazard posed by the Wasatch Fault.
