Welcome to the Clark Planetarium, a unique and fascinating destination located at the intersection of 400 West and 100 South in the downtown City of Salt Lake, Utah. The Clark Planetarium opened in April 2003, replacing the historic Hansen Planetarium, and offers a unique and educational experience for visitors of all ages. The Clark Planetarium features the 55-foot Hansen Dome Theater, the first “pitless” digital dome planetarium in the United States. Seating up to 190 people, this theater offers individual interactive seat button controls and a specially tuned 13,000-watt sound system with 5.1 surround sound and 21 speakers. With a resolution far beyond high-definition video, the dome theater offers a truly immersive experience to explore the universe in 3-D. In addition, the theater features a variety of space-related shows, from fully immersive 3-D productions to live-narrated current events programs to family shows and music entertainment performances.
The Northrop Grumman IMAX Theater is a must-see experience at the Clark Planetarium. Showcasing science and nature documentaries, the IMAX theater features both 3-D and 2-D films. After a major renovation in 2010, the theater now features digital projectors, a new screen, new seats, and a new sound system.
In addition to the dome theater and IMAX theater, the Clark Planetarium features three floors of free, interactive exhibits. Guests can explore the forces that shape our ever-changing planet, from wind, water, volcanoes, and earthquakes to cosmic impacts. There is also a spectacular real moon rock on display, and visitors can try their hand at a Lunar Lander exhibit to experience the forces of gravity, acceleration, and inertia.
