Welcome to the Forestiere Underground Gardens, a subterranean wonderland of patios, grottoes, and garden courts located in the City of Fresno, CA. Built by Baldassare Forestiere, an immigrant from Sicily, over a period of 40 years from 1906 to his death in 1946, this site is a spectacular and unconventional example of vernacular architecture and is now managed by members of the Forestiere family through the Forestiere Historical Center.

Baldassare Forestiere’s dream of becoming a citrus farmer in America brought him to Fresno in 1901, and he soon began crafting an underground world of his own patterned after the ancient catacombs of his hometown of Filari, Sicily. Using only simple farm tools like a pick, a shovel, and a wheelbarrow, he dug, chipped, and carved the hardpan sedimentary rock to create a 10-acre complex over the course of 40 years.
